By Bradley Mitchell, About.com

Question: Whats My IP Address?

A network may contain multiple computers or others devices each having their own IP address (or addresses). Answering the question "What's My IP Address?" depends on exactly which IP address you seek.

Answer: Internet sites such as whatismyipaddress.com can automatically detect my IP address when accessed through the Web browser. These sites only work if that computer is connected to the Internet. Additionally, on a home network these sites may not find that computer's address but the address of a network router instead.

On Windows, my IP address can be determined reliably using these methods:

On Macintosh computers, my IP address can be located in the TCP/IP Control Panel. On Mac OS X computers, my IP address can be located under the "Internet and Network" section of System Preferences.

If asking the question "What's My IP Address" in regards to a network router, use this method:

Finally, if someone else wants to know "What's My IP Address", they may be able to find it inside emails sent.
