How To Control File Sharing Uploads in Kazaa Media Desktop

By Bradley Mitchell, About.com

KMD (Kazaa Media Desktop) has default network settings that control the number of file downloads and uploads as well as the network bandwidth they consume. The default settings in KMD allow open file sharing in both directions. This can consume significant network bandwidth in some situations. Follow these steps to more tightly control outbound file sharing and set appropriate bandwidth restrictions without adversely affecting download performance.
Difficulty: Easy
Time Required: minutes

Here's How:

  1. Open the Kazaa Media Desktop client application.

  2. Open the Tools menu, then click Options... . The KMD Options window appears.

  3. In the KMD Options window, click the Traffic tab. In older versions of KMD where no Traffic tab exists, click the Sharing tab instead.

  4. If in the Traffic tab and wanting to disable all KMD uploads and downloads, check the checkbox to turn ON the option for "Disable sharing of file with other KaZaa members."

Alternatively, change the maximum number of simultaneous uploads from "unlimited" to "0". This disables uploads but will likely also restrict the ability to download to this computer. To preserve the ability to download while still greatly limiting the ability to upload, set the maximum number of simultaneous uploads to 1.

  5. If in the Sharing tab, uncheck the checkbox to turn OFF the option for "Share files in 'My Shared Folder'.

  6. From the KMD Options window again, click on the Advanced tab that is next to either the Traffic or Sharing tab.

  7. On the Advanced tab, first set the maximum bandwidth in kilobits to be used for uploads. Changing this value from the default of "unlimited" to "0" will fully restrict both uploads and downloads. To preserve the ability to download while still greatly limiting the bandwidth for uploads, set this value to "24", that represents the minimal bandwidth setting for dial-up Internet connections. Note that this setting can be made even for computers having high-speed Internet connections.

  8. Next on the Advanced tab, check the checkbox to set the "Do not function as a Supernode" option. Supernodes facilitate P2P file searches that can consume significant network bandwidth.

  9. Next, uncheck the checkbox on the Advanced tab for "Optimal bandwidth use when computer is idle." This option encourages the Kazaa network to utilize network bandwidth when the computer is actively uploading or downloading.

  10. Finally, if this version of Kazaa uses a Sharing tab instead of a Traffic tab, change the maximum number of simultaneous uploads from "unlimited" to "0" (to disable all uploads and potentially all download capability) or "1" (to maximally restrict uploads while not affecting the ability to download.

Tips:

  1. Swap files legally.
